Photo Writing Prompts – 1

So, I awoke early and I’m bored. I don’t feel like writing, but maybe you do. Perhaps you are in the mood to create, but are having a bit of trouble getting started. Or maybe you just want to work on your descriptive writing. In either case, here’s an exercise for you.

Look at the photos below – click to enlarge if you want – and use the images to create a brief scene in your mind. Don’t think about it too much, just grab the first idea that comes into your head, and let it flow. If it’s silly, you can fix it later. The point is to start. If you want to practice writing visual descriptions, find the key item in the photo that resonates. It can be the item your character will notice first, or will interact with. It can be something that creates an emotional response or pulls up a memory. Simply use the image, and write what you see, how it sounds. Describe the feel of the sun on your character’s face or the wind in her eyes. It’s your world – change it; make the sky rain fire, or sheep. Change the season – create, feel, write.

It doesn’t matter if you know you’re only describing a photo. Your reader won’t see the photo – only your words. You can even combine multiple images to form something new. If you give it a try, let us know in the comments.

Cheers.
