born a woman

child

i, born a woman
least i not forgotten child
grimace with the crushing weight
brother’s hunger, mother’s guilt
help my sister carry on

we, never children
close my eyes to bury hope
focus on the task at hand
one more brick, just one they said
ignore the sharp and always pain

i, always grown up
dolls are things for little girls
dreams are fairies’ evil lies
i am woman, work at six
eighteen hours, sleep again
